Meet the Team: Monty, the Tryhard
There is no such thing as overkill. There is only 'Open Fire' and 'I Need To Reload'.
An introduction of sorts
Hi there! I appear to have been nominated as the resident evildoer on the team, despite there being traitor players running much less pleasant factions that I (looking at you James and the Night Lords). I started wargaming when I started secondary school in September of 2009, back in the glory days of 5th edition. I was drawn to Necrons at the time, purely because of the clear green rods in the guns, but also because I thought the monolith pyramid tank was super rad. Their 5th edition codex came out a couple of years later and boy was I given a trial by fire for competitive gaming. I tasted blood at the school league that year not dropping a single match all the way to the national finals, and though we did not emerge ultimately triumphant, a fire had been kindled that would see me go on to seek ever greater heights of debauched competitive army list building.
More specifically I started playing Heresy at the same time I got back in to 40k, having taken a 3 year hiatus when 6th came to a crashing halt; around end of December 2017. With zero prior knowledge of how Heresy worked, I was driven purely by my fantasy character preference of playing spell casters, so I was delighted that I could finally get to put my dream army on the table: the Thousand Sons. My plan was to use the plastic Mk. III space marines from the Burning of Prospero box, as well as Ahriman, to kickstart an army that could be used in both systems. So, I poured time and student finance money in to my new Heresy army. I even got myself a lovely Magnus the Red, pictured below:
Approximately 3 months later, I finally had everything built and painted, and had even managed to snag a second hand copy of Book 7: Inferno from a local games store. All my friends stopped wanting to play with me, accusing me of cheese-mongering to the highest degree. So, I took another short break to venture off in to competitive 8th Edition 40k, and came out the other side rounder, wiser, and in possession of five more Imperial Knights than I’d started with.
“Oh goodie,” I thought when I heard about their army list in the Crusade Imperialis book, “now I have even more units to get back in to Heresy with!” until I was once again brought to the realisation that this was the third time I had picked an army that nobody wanted to play against. Slightly disheartened, but not discouraged, I decided at this point it was just best to embrace it and move forwards.
What I play now and nice pictures of them
So I still have my Thousand Sons, built up as a 2000pt Guard of the Crimson King force. It’s an army that doesn’t leave the box much nowadays due to not being 100% painted.
Besides that, I have three other forces:
A 3000pt Ironfire list of Iron Warriors and Mechanicum; complete with a trio of basilisks, a whirlwind scorpius, a Shadowsword, and a Minotaur
Tactical Squad Valikos Archmagos Reductor Galista Periate-2-7 and her Thallax Cohort Rho-1 Ordo Reuctor Minotaur A 3000pt list of Imperial Knights; comprising a Dominus, a Gallant, a Warden, a Paladin, an Atrapos, 2 Warglaives, and 2 Moirax
The Combined Might of House Galvus And a burgeoning militia force, revolving around ~20 heavy weapons teams in the back of a Stormlord (watch this space for a breakdown on that list soon!)
So that’s me, the local bad guy who plays mean armies because he likes them. Stay tuned for the following articles on my armies:
